There are two ways to test a campaign.   You can modify your original campaign to enroll only a small group of test members and configure send times to accommodate your testing schedule, or you can can create a separate “test campaign” designed specifically for testing purposes.

The following are some tips/suggestions for testing various campaign types.

Campaigns that send emails with wait time in between

  • Welcome Campaigns
  • Call to Action Campaigns
  • Event Promotion
  • Fundraising
Sample Campaign Modify Existing Campaign Create Test Campaign
Send 1st emailwait 14 days

Send 2nd email

wait 14 days

Send 3rd email

wait 14 days

Send final email

Add only test members to the campaign (best accomplished by creating a group of test members and use the “in a group” method for campaign enrollment)
Modify the campaign and reduce the time interval between each send to several hours
Deploy the campaign
Once testing is completed go back and modify time intervals and modify campaign enrolment  and re-deploy the campaign
Create a test campaign
Add only test members to the campaign (best accomplished by creating a group of test members and use the “in a group” method for campaign enrollment)
Set the time interval between each send to several hours

Date based campaigns that send email

  • Birthdays and anniversaries
  • Membership and subscription renewal
  • Date triggered notices

These campaigns are somewhat more challenging because you will have to create campaign recipients with the specific dates to match the expected send actions.

Sample Campaign Modify Existing Campaign Create Test Campaign
Send 1st email 90 days prior to date in a custom field (say expiration date)
Send 2nd email 30 days prior to date in custom field
Send 3rd email 10 after date in custom field
Add only test members to the campaign (best accomplished by creating a group of test members and use the “in a group” method for campaign enrollment)
For each test recipient modify the dates in the custom field to generate the emails according to your desired test schedule.
Once testing is completed go back and modify the dates in the custom fields and modify campaign enrolment  and re-deploy the campaign
Add only test members to the campaign (best accomplished by creating a group of test members and use the “in a group” method for campaign enrollment)
For each test recipient modify the dates in the custom field to generate the emails according to your desired test schedule.
