For example, this functionality may be used for a personalized greeting like: Hello John, since these values are inserted at the time of send it is especially important that you are mindful of your Custom and Enhanced Field usage, in particular that the originating data source contains correct information.

For example, if you want to include a salutation followed by a recipient’s first and last name, you would type the following into the subject line

Greetings INSERT_FIRST_NAME INSERT_LAST_NAME

You can find a list of personalization keywords here.

The Subject Line has a limitation of 100 characters, if the personalization keyword entered extends beyond this it will be cut to fit.

Troubleshooting

Why was there an incorrect value?

Did you update the field? Custom and Enhanced Fields are all tied to the recipient, so whenever someone makes an update to that field for that recipient, whatever value we have at the time of send will be the value inserted.  A great way to prevent incorrect values is to utilize enhanced personalization and setting your fields to private.

Why was there a blank value?

Did you update the field, or was the value blank in your CSV file? Custom and Enhanced Fields are all tied to the recipient, so whenever someone makes an update to that field for that recipient, whatever value we have at the time of send will be the value inserted.  A great way to prevent empty values is to utilize the default personalization tool by going to Contacts > Custom Fields > Personalization and inserting a default value.
