A recipient is an individual email address added to the Real Magnet system.  This can be accomplished via an upload to a group, an API call, or even with a Subscription Management Page (SMP).

While the terms are the same for all Unsubscribe Types – Unsubscribe from All does not offer the enhanced functionality of viewing Unsubscribe and Subscribe Status.

Recipient Status

A recipient is the term Real Magnet uses to describe an individual in your Real Magnet database. You can have an unlimited number of recipients. Each recipient is identified uniquely either by their email address or by a custom ID.

You can view a recipient’s status by logging into Real Magnet:

  1. Select Contacts
  2. Select Recipients*
  3. Enter the Email
  4. Select Search
  5. Single click on the record
  6. Select Subscribe/Unsubscribe

*If not currently in the most up to date interface Contacts > Simple Search > Enter the Email > Select Submit > for the selected record select the green details icon > in the upper right select the Unsubscribe/Subscribe icon.

A recipient’s status page will reflect:

Subscription Records

A recipient in Real Magnet has the following possible statuses that can directly impact whether they can receive a message.  Subscription statuses of Unsubscribed or Subscribed are stored within a specific section of the Real Magnet system, per Account.  In addition to a recipient record (any individual uploaded to Real Magnet), recipients’ also have a subscription record.  This is completely different than the ability to send to the recipient.

Each recipient can have the following statuses in Real Magnet:

  1. Available to send to
  2. Subscribed
  3. Unsubscribed

There is an additional status that can be updated for a recipient to exclude them from all message sends:

  1. Suppressed

Recipient subscription statuses are managed by:

  1. Users logging into Real Magnet and manually changing the recipient preference
  2. A one-click unsubscribe link in the message clicked by the recipient
  3. Via a subscription management page (SMP) that is hosted by Real Magnet, or the client via a DIV tag

If a recipient needs to unsubscribe or subscribe it is recommended that it is completed following any of the steps above.

Available to send to

Unless previously suppressed during the onboarding process or categorized as Role Addresses all recipients successfully uploaded to the Real Magnet system are Available to send to; these recipients are also individuals who have opted in to receive Real Magnet messages via a previously established relationship with the sender.

Please note that as a sender, it is your responsibility to make sure that all recipients you upload in Real Magnet have explicitly consented to receive communications from you. Real Magnet can manage the “opt-out” portion of the process, but the “explicit opt-in” portion is necessary before you upload any contact list.

A recipient’s status when they are initially added to Real Magnet will reflect the below.

Message or Group Category

Unsubscribe from all

When an individual is available to send to and Unsubscribe from All is the Unsubscribe Type for the account – the record will simply exist in the Real Magnet system with no flag that represents they have been unsubscribed.

Subscribed

A recipient subscription status of Subscribed can only occur when a recipient explicitly opts to receive a message.  This is generally completed via an SMP page. Once a recipient subscribes, the flag is checked in the Subscribe section of the Account’s Real Magnet database, and their record will reflect the below.

Message or Group Category

Note: that there is a date of the subscribe activity, as well as the ability to view the history of the recipients’ unsubscribe and subscribe statuses.

If Message Category is the unsubscribe preference, there is an additional tool on the Send Message to Group page.  This tool will expose the option to Send to Subscribed.  This means in addition to your uploaded list, you can also send to those individuals that have subscribed to the Message Category associated with your message.

Unsubscribe from all

When an individual is subscribed to and Unsubscribe from All is the Unsubscribe Type for the account – the record will simply exist in the Real Magnet system with no flag that represents they have been subscribed.

Unsubscribed

A recipient subscription status of Unsubscribed occurs when a recipient has explicitly chosen not to receive messages.   This is generally completed via an unsubscribe link in messages, an SMP or by a user in Real Magnet. Once a recipient unsubscribes, the flag is checked in the Unsubscribe section of the Account’s Real Magnet database and their record will reflect the below.

Message or Group Category

Note that there is a date of the unsubscribe activity, as well as the ability to view the history of the recipients’ unsubscribe and subscribe statuses.

If Message or Group Category is your Unsubscribe Type – recipients may still Unsubscribe from All – this is accomplished via a specific one-click link, or via the SMP page.

If this functionality is also enabled for your account settings, they will also have the alert flag:

Unsubscribe from all

The below is a representation of when a recipient has unsubscribed from all, this can be accomplished via an SMP page, or with a one-click link at the bottom of your message.  If the unsubscribe setting for your account is Unsubscribe to All this is how a recipient who has unsubscribed will look.

Suppressed

Suppression is an absolute Do Not Send status in Real Magnet. Once a recipient is suppressed they will no longer receive any emails from that account. Most often suppression is completed by uploading records to the account via Tools, across accounts using Suppression across Accounts, or by an individual recipient.  There are a variety of reasons for a suppression to occur:

User-Driven Suppression

  • Campaign: Automatically suppressed via a Real Magnet user-defined campaign action.
  • List Upload: Real Magnet user uploaded a list of multiple recipients to be suppressed.
  • Suppressed Across Accts: Automatically suppressed via a regularly scheduled task which finds suppressed recipients in one account and applies them to another linked account.

Automatic Suppression

  • Auto Non-Engaged Suppress: An optional functionality that is enabled based on rules set by Real Magnet’s deliverability department or by the client. Automatically suppressed via an account rule to suppress recipients with consecutive “Non Opens”.
  • Bad Domain: Automatically suppressed via an account rule to suppress recipients with 2 consecutive “bad domain” bounces.
  • User Not Found: Automatically suppressed via an account rule to suppress recipients with 2 consecutive “user not found” bounces.

Recipient Driven Suppression

  • Manage Subscription: Recipient indicated preference via a subscription page.
  • Spam Complaint: Automatically suppressed after the recipient clicked on a “report spam” type button or link while reviewing an email. This can only be reversed when the Real Magnet support team receives an email from the recipient requesting to be re-subscribed.
