The Canadian Anti Spam Law (CASL) requires that marketers obtain the express consent from any recipient that can be reasonably assumed resides in Canada before sending them electronic communications.

In this tutorial, we will cover how to identify and consolidate the Canadian recipients in your account. We will walk through the same process using both Marketing Automation Search and the Advanced Search under Contacts.

We should note that these methods will not identify Canadian recipients who use an email address that is not specific to Canada, or do not have identifying information provided. As always, the best way to be compliant is to maintain good email list hygiene.

Marketing Automation Search

The easiest way to identify and group all Canadian recipients in your account is by using the Search Tool in the Marketing Automation module to identify all recipients with a .CA email domain.

  1. Select Automation.
  2. Select Reports/Search in the left navigation.
  3. Click Select Condition.
  4. Select Field Value.
  5. Select Has a string in a field.
  6. Select Email for field.
  7. Select equals to and change to ends with from the drop-down menu.
  8. Enter the value .CA in the text box.

Expand this search by also searching against Company. You may also want to repeat this step below for other variations, for example, searching for Canadian in the Company field.

  1. Select + add ‘or’ condition.
  2. Click Select Condition.
  3. Select Field Value.
  4. Select Has a sting in a field.
  5. Select Company for field.
  6. Select equals to and change to contains from the drop-down menu.
  7. Enter the value Canada in the text box.

Expand this search by also searching against any custom or enhanced fields that contain Country data.

  1. Select Search.
  2. Once the search completes, select Add All to Group.
  3. Click Add New.
  4. Ensure that the group name is descriptive e.g. Canadian Recipients.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Make sure to Save Search to save this search for the future.

Advanced Search

For customers without Marketing Automation, the same results can be achieved with Advanced Search under the Contacts.

Like we did with the MA Search tutorial, we will be focusing our search on the Email, Company and Country custom field in order to produce our group of Canadian recipients.

  1. Select Contacts.
  2. Click Advanced Search.
  3. Check the Email checkbox under the Contacts section.
  4. Click Search
  5. Enter .CA into the text field.
  6. Click Search.
  7. Click Add to Group.
  8. Click Add New.
  9. Create a group name that is descriptive e.g. Canadian Recipients.
  10. Click Save.

Expand this group’s membership by also searching against Company. You may also want to repeat this step below for other variations, for example, searching for Canadian in the Company field.

  1. Select Contacts.
  2. Click Advanced Search.
  3. Check the Company checkbox under the Contacts section.
  4. Click Search
  5. Enter Canada into the text field.
  6. Click Search.
  7. Click Add to Group.
  8. Select the group that you created earlier.
  9. Click Save.

Expand this search by also searching against any custom or enhanced fields that contain Country data.

  1. Click Advanced Search.
  2. Check the Country checkbox under the Custom Fields section.
  3. Click Search
  4. Enter Canada into the text field.
  5. Click Search.
  6. Click Add to Group.
  7. Select your group of Canadian recipients.
  8. Click Save.

By performing and adding these three searches in one group, you have consolidated a group identifying Canadian recipients in your Real Magnet account. Future Canadian recipients can be added to this group to help ensure compliance with CASL.
